Books I've loved reading since I started homeschooling a year ago

Wow, I was surprised to see how much I've read this year!

One principle of Thomas Jefferson Education is "you, not them." This means that parents and leaders set the example of loving and prioritizing learning, and getting a great education themselves.  I love the excuse to study these wonderful books, some with my family, and some with our homeschool youth group!

I've also read some good children's literature:

  • The Jungle Book
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • The Sign of the Beaver
  • The Trumpeter of Krakow
  • Otto of the Silver Hand

And some fabulous talks, articles, and documents:

(A few of the above books I read right before we started homeschooling. The few below are ones I'll be reading in the next couple months.)

Books I'll be reading Soon for our Homeschool Youth Group

Good, Clean Movies

I am picky about media. Period. I have studied about it and given presentations about it. It is a big deal to me.  God's standard of media is clear: "Do not attend, view, or participate in anything that is vulgar, immoral, violent, or pornographic in any way." (For the Strength of Youth booklet).

That doesn't leave a whole lot left to watch, does it?

So when I find a good, clean, wholesome movie that is uplifting, edifying, inspiring, and promotes things I hold dear, like faith and family, I get excited and want to support those movie makers!  Many of these can be watched for free on Zion Tube.

Here are a few our family recommends.

We watched Courageous on our ClearPlay DVD player as this is PG-13,
from some violent police and gang scenes.

Ben Carson was invited to speak at a recent National Prayer Breakfast on February 7, 2013.
President and Mrs. Obama are sitting right there. Ben respectfully declines the limitations of political correctness, and candidly spells out reasons and solutions for some of America's problems. Wonderful!

The following titles are eye-opening about what's really going on in the world and in our country today.  I highly recommend them.

Great Movie Resources for Christian/LDS Families

Christian Cinema

I just discovered Christian Cinema, a Netflix-type company that only carries family and faith promoting movies!

Since then I discovered another source of Christian movies:  Christian Film Database. It appears that you can rent or watch movies using pay-per-view.  They promote films with a Christian message, and claim to be the most extensive database of Christian movies ever.

Zion Tube

Zion Tube is a great movie resource with an LDS perspective.  Created by a Utah homeschool family, it highlights heroes and heroins from history, carries movies about history, government, religion, science, and so on. Some are full-length movies, some are clips, and some are trailers to help you see if you want to rent or buy the movie. Great site!  (Sorry, I don't remember the name of the family who created it or I would give them credit!)

Clear Play DVD Player Filter

The ClearPlay DVD player filters out inappropriate parts of DVDs according to how you program it.  It can filter out swear words, a bedroom scene, violence, and so on.  It is not a cure-all. It cannot filter out a dark theme, or the fact that two people are living together without being married, or things like that.  The customer purchases a monthly membership to download the current and past movie filters from their website. We purchased a short-term membership and then cancelled it.  That means we don't have access to the filters for brand new movies, but that's okay. We don't watch movies very often, and when we do, we usually just choose something that's clean to begin with.
