"We are at war... Satan is...set on destroying you... This is a life and death contest we are in..." (Elder Holland)
You need tools to win.
President James Ferrell was like our Captain Moroni tonight, inspiring us in the importance of our cause, helping us see the enemy's weapons, and inviting us to step up and do more in our families to win this war.
He opened with the striking story of Iwo Jima, analogizing it to our young people being the marines coming from the ships to the beaches with machine guns aimed at them. The battle ships bombarding the enemy with artillery represent church leaders. The B-52s dropping explosive bombs represent good parents. But eventually every young person has to hit the beach, so they need to be ready and have tools to win the war.
In the last seven years President Ferrell has sent off over 500 missionaries and interviewed over 6,000 young adults. So he has unique expertise about the tools Satan uses to cause so many casualties of today's young people.
Listen Here to this power-packed talk. Hear inspiring stories and come away with five powerful tools or patterns of success that he has seen work over and over, to help young people win this war! The recording has an echo at the beginning but it gets better when he switches mics. It's worth listening carefully. The beginning is a short intro by a young woman. The end is our Stake President Dale Cook giving closing remarks. Pres. Robb's talk in the middle is about 65 minutes long.
President Ferrell is one busy man - a dental surgeon, a father of nine including two missionaries, and a young adult stake president twelve young adult wards. We feel blessed that he made time for our stake fireside. Thank you President Ferrell!

President Ferrell encouraged us to read a 1987 Elder Holland talk and then quoted a recent one:
I am looking tonight for men young and old who care enough about this battle between good and evil to sign on and speak up. We are at war, and for these next few minutes, I want to be a one-man recruiting station. ... This is a life-and-death contest we are in, young men, so I am going to get in your face a little, nose to nose, with just enough fire in my voice to singe your eyebrows a little—the way coaches do when the game is close and victory means everything. And with the game on the line, what this coach is telling you is that to play in this match, some of you have to be more morally clean than you now are. In this battle between good and evil, you cannot play for the adversary whenever temptation comes along and then expect to suit up for the Savior at temple and mission time as if nothing has happened. That, my young friends, you cannot do. God will not be mocked. ... Satan is a real being set on destroying you. ("We Are All Enlisted," Ensign, Nov. 2011)
Mike typed up notes from the fireside. They're right here.
